After months of planning and collaborating, we’re excited to finally tell you about an exhibition we have put together along with the Polish Consulate in Toronto and the Film Museum in Łódź.

On September 1st, 2011 the cinematic world of Krzysztof Kieślowski (director of such masterpieces as Oscar nominated the Three Colours Trilogy, Decalogue and The Double Life of Véronique) is coming to Toronto.

Marking the 70th anniversary of his birth and the 15th anniversary of his death, the Film Museum in Łódź along with the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Toronto and YouNxt proudly present the North American premiere of Kieślowski in Posters: The Films of Krzysztof Kieślowski in World Film Posters.

The collection consists of film posters from countries such as: Spain, Italy, Israel, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland. Its travelled the world and in September will debut in Canada during the Toronto International Film Festival.

On loan from the Film Museum in Łódź for a limited engagement in the epicenter of Toronto’s film festival action, the exhibition will be on display at the Steam Whistle Gallery from September 1-10 and subsequently at the Metro Hall Rotunda from September 12-17. Admission is free.

Anyone with an appreciation for stunning classic and retro movie posters is invited to view the exhibition and attend the opening reception on Wednesday, August 31 from 7pm – 11pm at Steam Whistle Gallery.

Last night YouNxt and the Polish Consulate in Toronto hosted the opening reception for Plakat: World Cinema Through The Eye of Polish Graphic Artists at Steam Whistle Brewery, and oh what a reception it was! DJ Riviera didn’t disappoint spinning modern dance and techno versions of classic Hollywood film soundtracks alongside a delicious feast of sushi, canapés and an assortment of hors d’œuvre thanks to Grindhouse that kept the over 200 people in attendance full until the party wrapped up at midnight.

From the minute the party started you could hear people oohing and aahing over the posters on display, floored by how breathtaking and dynamic they are. ‘Which one’s your favourite?’ was definitely the most popular phrase of the night and turned into a game of sorts by the end of the evening.

The reception is over but the exhibition is only beginning. On display until September 18 there are still 17 days left to check out these amazing works of art. Stop by Steam Whistle between now and September 11, or Metro Hall Rotunda between September 13-18 and let us know…which one’s your favourite.

Finally, a few shout-outs are necessary as many people were vital in pulling this exhibition together. First off a HUGE thanks is due to the Polish Consulate in Toronto, specifically Vice Consul Wojtek Dziegiel and his wife Asia Chalimoniuk without whom none of this would have been possible (ha, this is starting to sound like an Oscar acceptance speech). We’re also very thankful to Steam Whistle (and Mike Arlotto) for the amazing venue, Canada Poland Chamber of Commerce, our media sponsor Gazeta Gazeta (specifically Margaret Bonikowska), Grindhouse for the delicious food, Eye Weekly and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Toronto.

As for the opening reception, that would not have been possible without the invaluable help of Marta Ogonek, Iza Stabinsk and Asia Chalimoniuk. Many thanks ladies.

Now it’s onwards and upwards. Let’s start planning the next event.

Come one, come all! Not only is tomorrow night the opening of our Polish film poster exhibition (at Steam Whistle from 7pm to 11pm), it’s also the day during which YouNxt will be screening The Other Side of the Poster, a documentary film about the history and evolution of Polish film posters.

This film comes to us courtesy of the Polish Consulate in Toronto and Kalejdoskop Film Studio in Poland. It is the film’s NORTH AMERICAN debut and YouNxt is thrilled to be a part of it. Later this year it will also appear at EKRAN (The Toronto Polish Film Festival.)

The Other Side of the Poster

Directed by Marcin Latałło

Produced by Wojciech Szczudło – Studio Filmowe Kalejdoskop

The Other Side of the Poster is the first documentary about one of the most important graphic movements of the XXth Century: the Polish Poster School which became a world-wide phenomena in the 1960-70’s and influenced graphic artists the world over.

Polish film posters put art over commerce. They captured the essence of the film in one iconic image. They also expressed the freedom of their creators in communist times and often linked to cultural and historical events.

Looking back now, Polish film posters tell the story of post-war Poland, of censorship in the communist times and the ways artists found to bypass it.

*** Join us from 6pm to 7pm for the screening at Steam Whistle Gallery just prior to the opening reception of the poster exhibition. We’re very excited and hope you are too! See you tomorrow night.***
