Marcin Wrona’s Christening (Chrzest) made its TIFF debut to a packed house at the AMC cinema in Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square.
Hundreds gathered to watch the first of three public screenings at what is now the most successful and prominent films festival in the world.
The gritty drama tells the story of Michal (Wojciech Zielinski) who hopes to change his luck and escape his criminal past. But when he’s pursued by a violent gang, he desperately tries to find a way to save his family and the only person that can help him is an old friend unsure of which side of the law he’ll stick to.
Christening is featured in TIFF’s Vanguard section that showcases the work of young and edgy filmmakers whose films defy convention and twist genres, styles and narrative structures to tell fresh and provocative stories.
After the screening Marcin took part in a Q&A and answered questions about the film’s very engaging and emotionally challenging plot that is actually based on a true story. It was evident from the many questions that the film struck a deep chord with the audience. Many stuck around to speak with the director even after the Q&A was over.
The discussion spilled over into the auditorium where Marcin signed photographs and took pictures with fans. Later, he, along with Producer Tomasz Szulc and members of YouNxt and Ekran as well as other film fans hit up a nearby lounge for some casual drinks.
Great film. Great audience reception and overall a terrific night!
