Hot Docs is the most acclaimed documentary film festival on the planet and getting into it is no easy task. The filmmakers who were invited to the festival accomplished something extremely difficult. Their presence at Hot Docs is a testament to their skills and talent and it is not a stretch to say that they represent some of the finest documentarians around.
In total four Polish films were invited to the festival: Six Weeks, Chemo, A Man Came And Took Her and War Games and the Man Who Stopped Them. Although some of these docs were made by seasoned filmmakers and others were the works of young talent, all the films were crafted with great proficiency and they were amazingly engaging.
With great drinks and food in hand we congratulated the filmmakers and were especially excited to be joined by most of them on a wet but exciting Toronto evening. Among the filmmakers were:
– Rafal Przybyl, Jedrzej Niestroj, Wojciech Szczudlo and Bogna Podbielska (A Man Came and Took Her)
– Dariusz Jablonski (War Games and the Man Who Stopped Them)
– Malgosia and Wojtek Staron (Six Weeks)
We all greatly missed the presence of producer Zbigniew Kowalski who worked together with Rafal and Jedrzej and had to make an early return to Poland. Zbigniew is an extremely talented individual with a deep passion for film and it was great to be able to meet him and get to know him throughout his stay in Toronto. Perhaps soon we’ll see him back in the city with another film.
But for those that were there, the evening was fantastic. The house was full, there was a great atmosphere, and lively conversations by some really dynamic personalities made it a really memorable night.
Big thanks go out to Urszula Terlecki (YouNxt) and Marta Ogonek (Ekran) for putting together such a great celebration. Also, thank you to our sponsors (The Canada-Poland Chamber of Commerce, Ekran Polish Film Festival in Toronto and the Polish Consulate in Toronto) as well as the companies and individuals who provided our terrific door prizes (Yellow Cup Café, European Fine Foods, Dr. Jack Pozniakowski and Starsky Foods). You helped make the party a great success.
Hot Docs 2010 might be over but our love and appreciation for great films remains.
