Only a few musicians/bands can lay claim to being the voice of a generation. During Poland’s turbulent 1980’s one of these bands was the rock group Perfect. The band’s origin dates back to 1978 but it was in the autumn of 1980, under the direction of lead guitarist Zbigniew Hołdys and vocalist Grzegorz Markowski, that the band really took shape. They played to a generation of Poles desperate for change. Their music touched people and delivered a glimmer of hope for the future.
Perfect’s main lyricist was Bogdan Olewicz. Influenced by the social and political transformations at the time, he wrote songs that reflected the problems and frustrations of a nation suffocated by a communist regime. Perfect’s concerts provided a platform for Polish youth to voice their opposition. Frustrated audiences creatively changed the words of the band’s songs. “Chcemy być sobą” (We want to be ourselves) became “Chcemy bić ZOMO” (We want to beat ZOMO); ZOMO was the paramilitary riot police at the time. Their song “Autobiografia” (Autobiography) became the unofficial anthem of Polish Rock.
Over the last three decades Perfect has gone through various reincarnations with certain members coming and going. In April they will perform in New York, Chicago and Toronto. Don’t miss the opportunity to listen to this amazing band live.

Borders with East Germany, the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia have been closed and air space over Poland has been shut. It is aimed at curbing the growing influence of the independent trade union Solidarity who reacted to the measures by calling a national strike.
